Many
players meet the ball too late and behind the
proper contact point. Use a target-training hoop
and have the player stand behind it, reaching
out with the racket through the opening. Now the
player has to meet the ball in front. This exercise
can be used for either forehand or backhand. If
a hoop is not available, just standing outside
the gate and reaching in will have the same result.
The
main reason people hit the volley late is that
they have failed to move their feet to a better
position, particularly on the first volley. Remember
to move forward until the opponent is about to
hit the ball, then split step with the racket
extended.
