Correcting a Late Volley

Many players meet the ball too late and behind the proper contact point. Use a target-training hoop and have the player stand behind it, reaching out with the racket through the opening. Now the player has to meet the ball in front. This exercise can be used for either forehand or backhand. If a hoop is not available, just standing outside the gate and reaching in will have the same result.

The main reason people hit the volley late is that they have failed to move their feet to a better position, particularly on the first volley. Remember to move forward until the opponent is about to hit the ball, then split step with the racket extended.
